Our trainings can help individuals in various roles develop knowledge and skills to effectively communicate health information in writing and in person. This helps patients and consumers understand and use the information to improve their health.

Teaching methods are highly interactive and designed to increase the knowledge and skills of participants through lecture, interactive discussion, and collaborative breakout sessions.

Available training offerings include:

  • Applied Plain Language Training for Effective Written Communication

This 6-hour intensive skills-based course split between 2 sessions is designed for up to 30 professionals who prepare and approve public-facing written materials. The following learning objectives will frame course content:

  • Describe the rationale for attention to clear communication based on professional roles and responsibilities.

  • Describe challenges associated with communicating health information.

  • Describe a health behavior theory and how to use it to develop health information.

  • Improve readability and understanding of materials using appropriate words, sentence structure, and numbers appropriately.

  • Describe strategies to make health information actionable.

  • Describe appropriate use of visual aids in written health materials.

  • Applied Plain Language Training for Translators

This is an intensive skills-based course designed for up 30 professionals who interact with English language health materials and translate them to other languages. The following learning objectives frame the content for the two, 3-hour sessions of the course:

  • Describe the rationale for attention to clearly written translations based on professional roles and responsibilities.

  • Describe the challenges associated with communicating health information to audience with limited English proficiency.

  • Identify materials that incorporate plain language best practices to make them readable, understandable, and actionable.

  • Apply concepts to improve written materials’ readability and understandability through numbers, word choice, and sentence structure.

  • Engage with document owners to advocate for plain language adjustments to English language documents prior to translation to other languages.

  • Using Teach-Back to Advance Health Education Outcomes

This interactive, 3-hour workshop is designed for up 12 to 24 professionals who verbally communicate health information to patients, community members, and other stakeholders. In addition to the following learning objectives, participants will be provided opportunities to practice the teach-back methodology:

  • Describe the rationale for assessing learner feedback based on your professional roles and your organization’s mission and strategic objectives.

  • Learn fundamental skills for delivering verbal instruction in ways that address the health literacy limitations of learners.

  • Describe and practice the specific teach-back method for assessing learner understanding.

  • Writing Numbers for Health (coming soon)

This course is currently in development and expected to launch this year. This session will focus on sharing complex numerical health information such as measurements and risks and likely include up to 3-hours of training and a post-course writing assignment.
